New home prices in Calgary remain flat, but higher than one year ago

Monday, September 13th, 2010

New home prices in the Calgary census metropolitan area remained flat in July but were up from year-ago levels, says Statistics Canada. The federal agency reported today that the New Housing Price Index for the Calgary CMA was unchanged from June. However, it increased by 2.7 per cent from July 2009. At the national level, the NHPI decreased by 0.1 per cent in July, the first decrease at the Canada level in 13 months.  It was up, though, by 2.9 per cent from last year. Between June and July, prices decreased the most in Greater Sudbury and Thunder Bay (1.9 per cent), London (1.8 per cent) and Windsor (1.5 per cent), said Statistics Canada. The largest monthly increase was in Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo at 0.6 per cent.

The largest year-over-year increase was recorded in Regina (6.9 per cent), followed by St. John’s (6.1 per cent) and Winnipeg (5.0 per cent). Compared with July 2009, contractors’ selling prices were also higher in Ottawa-Gatineau (4.7 per cent), Vancouver (4.5
per cent) and Saskatoon (4.0 per cent). Among the 21 metropolitan areas surveyed, three registered 12-month declines in July: Charlottetown (2.1 per cent), Windsor (2.0 per cent) and Greater Sudbury and Thunder Bay (1.7 per cent).  To read more by Mario Toneguzzi with the Calgary Herald click here.

Calgary housing numbers down in August

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Home sales in Calgary continued to trend lower in the month of August. According to stats released by the Calgary Real Estate Board, the number of single family homes sold last month was down 32 per cent from the same time a year ago. Diane Scott, president of the CREB, says that our city’s housing market has been undergoing a measured correction over the past four to five months. She adds, sales are trending lower as a result of a decrease in first time home buyers entering the market and a decline in pent up demand following a strong post-recession recovery.  To read more click here

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Housing sales were down 30% in July from a year ago, and the Canadian Real Estate Association blames the drop on the new harmonized sales tax in Ontario and British Columbia.  The Ottawa-based group, which represents 100 real estate boards across the country, said July sales fell 6.8% on a seasonally adjusted basis from the previous month, a decline “almost entirely the result of fewer sales in British Columbia and Ontario,” where the HST went into effect on July 1.   To read the full article by the National Post click here .
